Description

Some hospitalized patients may undergo repeated phlebotomy for laboratory testing, which can contribute to the development of anemia. Certain steps can be taken to reduce unnecessary blood loss.

Reduce the amount of blood drawn:

(1) audit laboratory test orders and cancel any unnecessary orders

(2) use pediatric blood specimen tubes rather than regular blood tubes

(3) use laboratory instruments that require only small sample sizes

(4) do not draw extra blood unless there is a clear indication

Monitor and record the total amount of blood removed.

If blood is repeatedly drawn from an arterial or central line that requires flushing before specimen collection, consider a sterile system for reinfusion of the blood rather than disposing of it.
