Description

Infection with Taenia saginata can be prevented by adhering to some simple measures.

Ways to avoid infection with the beef tapeworm:

(1) Keep cattle away from areas contaminated with human feces.

(2) Test cattle for Taenia saginata (circulating antigen in serum, other).

(3) Inspect beef carcasses for cysticerci.

(4) Cook all beef products thoroughly.

(5) Either do not handle proglottids or handle them with care in order to avoid ingesting eggs (which can result in cysticercosis).

Being a vegetarian would reduce the risk but not eliminate it entirely.
