Description

Many conus snail envenomations can be prevented by education and common sense.

Ways to reduce conus snail envenomation:

(1) Educate the public in subtropical and tropical areas where conus snails are found, especially resorts.

(2) Avoid handling live snails.

If handling a live snail is a "must":

(3) Wear thick gloves.

(4) Before picking up a snail prod the snail with a long tool to cause the animal to retract into the shell.

(5) Pick up the snail from the rear, as far away from the opening as possible.

(6) Immediately drop the snail if the proboscus is advanced. It is flexible and extensible, and people have been stung while holding the rear of the shell.

(7) Do not hold a live snail in the palm of the hand.

(8) Do not place a live snail in a pocket or bag that may come in contact with the body.

(9) Do not reach a hand within a crevice to retrieve a snail. Use a long tool to dislodge the shell.
