Description

A wavy section refers a fold in a section causing it to extend out perpendicular to the slide surface. This is most often seen with skin sections.

Appearance under the microscope: All of the tissue in the wave is not in focus at one time since the area is piled up.

Risk factors for a wavy section:

(1) The water bath temperature is not properly set.

(2) The tissue is hard and brittle, often due to being over-processed.

(3) Incomplete flattening of the paraffin section on the water bath.

(4) Other reason for poor adhesion of the cut section to the slide.

Possible solutions:

(1) Make sure that the water bath is at its optimum temperature.

(2) Make sure that the tissue is not over-processed.

(3) Make sure that the paraffin section is completely stretched out on the water bath.
