Description

Water lily may contain hallucinogenic compounds. These were used in ancient Egypt and in the Maya culture.


Synonyms: blue lotus

 

Genus: Nymphaea

Species: caerulea, ampla, others

 

Class of active agent: aporphine alkaloid.

Examples of aporphine alkaloids: nymphaline, nupharine, nupharidine, nymphaeine

 

Aporphine can be hydroxylated in the body to form apomorphine.

 

Effects:

(1) emesis

(2) hallucinogenic state

(3) centrally acting, selective D1/D2 dopamine agonist

(4) smooth muscle relaxation

(5) mild sedation
