Description

A BLEVE (boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion) event can occur when a tank of liquid fuel is in a fire. Spraying water onto the tank may reduce the risk of explosion or else allow fuel to be drained.

Parameter:

(1) fuel capacity of the tank in U.S. gallons

target water flow rate in gallons per minute =

= 5 * SQRT(capacity)

Limitations:

• The flow rate is an approximate volume of water. It may or may not be successful in avoiding the BLEVE event.
