Description

Washerwoman hands (dishpan hands) occur in people whose hands are immersed in fluids for long periods.


 

NOTE: “Washerwoman skin” is used in forensic medicine to describe skin changes in drowning victims.

 

Appearance of affected hands:

(1) skin pallor and swelling with rugosity

(2) afterwards the skin may become dry and chapped

 

Risk factors:

(1) immersion of hands in hypotonic water for a prolonged period and/or repeatedly

(2) immersion of hands with damaged skin

(3) exposure to chemical irritants

(4) contact allergies

(5) recurrent skin abrasions

(6) cutaneous infection

 

Protection:

(1) minimizing abrasion

(2) wearing proper gloves

(3) minimizing immersion in water by use of washing tools

(4) avoiding harsh chemicals

(5) use of a proper skin moisturizer
