The risk of an underlying malignancy being the cause for globus pharyngeus is very low. The presence of certain findings can help to identify a patient who should have a more complete evaluation.
Patient selection: globus pharyngeus
Warning signs of an underlying malignancy:
(1) persistent hoarseness
(2) progressive dysphagia
(3) pain on swallowing
(4) hemoptysis
(5) unexplained weight loss
(6) worsening symptoms AND history of alcohol and/or tobacco abuse
