In a democratic process decisions are made by a vote, with one vote per participant.

Simple majority: majority of those present

Absolute majority: majority of all members

 

Abstentions are not counted in the vote.

Absentee ballots are often acceptable for people unable to be present.

 

Terms for voting results beyond a simple majoirty (supermajority):

(1) two-thirds (> 66.667%)

(3) three-fifths (> 60%)

 

A two-thirds majority is often able to overturn a gubernatorial veto.
