Pinggera et al identified the volume of the third ventricle as a predictor for shunt dependency after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. The authors are from the Medical University of Innsbruck in Austria.
Patient selection: aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage
Analysis: initial CT, with volumetric analysis of the third ventricle
Criteria for shunt dependency - placement of a ventricular shunt based on:
(1) increasing ventricular size
(2) clinical deterioration
A third ventricular volume >= 2.3 cubic cm was associated with a 4.3-fold increase in shunt dependency.
