When molten lava enters water it quickly forms steam, resulting in "laze".
Components of laze:
(1) water vapor
(2) hydrochloric and other acids
(3) microscopic particles of glass
The combination is:
(1) corrosive
(2) hazardous to inhale
If the water vapor is still hot, then thermal burn from steam would also be a hazard.
