Bae et al reported the Vitiligo Extent Score for a Target Area (VESTA) for evaluating a patient with vitiligo. This can be used to monitor the patient's response to therapy, and it shows good inter-rater reliability. The authors are from multiple institutions in Korea, Taiwan, China, and Japan.
Patient selection: vitiligo
Examination of the target area uses 2 reference cards:
(1) extent of repigmentation around the periphery of the target area, from 0 to 99%
(2) extent of perifollicular repigmentation in the remaining area affected by vitiligo, from 0 to 100%
Parameters:
(1) extent of repigmentation
(2) remaining area affected by vitiligo
(3) extent of perifollicular repigmentation
remaining affected area =
= 100% - (extent of repigmentation)
total repigmentation =
= (extent of repigmentation) + ((remaining area) * (extent of perifollicular repigmentation) / 100%)
Interpretation:
• minimum total repigmentation: 0%
• maximum total regimentation: 100%
