Hyperemesis gravidarum may be complicated by vitamin K deficiency as well as deficiencies in other vitamins. The vitamin K deficiency may affect both the mother and the fetus or newborn.
Patient selection: hyperemesis gravidarum
Maternal findings may include:
(1) prolonged PT and aPTT
(2) hemorrhage
Findings in fetus or neonate:
(1) vitamin K deficiency embryopathy
(2) hemorrhage (intraventricular hemorrhage, other)
(3) prolonged PT and aPTT
Complications can be avoided if vitamin K supplements are started soon after the hyperemesis is recognized.
