Description

The Internet has led to the appearance of the visiting internet fiancé (male) and fiancée (female), or VIF. The VIF is at risk for a number of problems other than a broken heart.

The male VIF is often older and divorced.

The female VIF is often younger and may be looking for a traditional husband if an immigrant.

Risks may include:

(1) sexually-transmitted disease (STD), including HIV

(2) other infection

(3) sexual assault

(4) other assault

(5) fraud

(6) pregnancy (if female)

The risks are increased if

(1) the VIF knows very little about the person being visited

(2) the person being visited is engaged in a criminal enterprise

(3) the location of the meeting is unsafe

The VIF should take steps to protect self:

(1) Perform a background check if possible on the person.

(2) Use a condom (if male).

(3) Use birth control or have access to emergency contraception (if female).

(4) Be vaccinated (HBV, HPB. HAV, etc).

(5) Take appropriate prophylaxis if no vaccine (malaria, etc).

(6) Have STD treated promptly and test for HIV.

(7) Share travel itinerary and take precautions against fraud.

(8) Have an emergency plan.
