The Visceral Fat Area (VFA) is measured on a transverse slice from a CT scan of the abdomen.
Analysis: transverse scan through the umbilicus
Fat recognition: attenuation from -50 to -150 Housefield units
visceral fat accumulation area =
= SUM(areas of fat in square cm within the abdomen)
The subcutaneous fat area can be measured in the same image.
Interpretation:
• In Japan a high VFA is > 130 square cm in a male and > 90 square cm in a female.
