Description

A number of serious viral infections can be spread through semen, sometimes for a period after the patient has clinically recovered.

Epstein Barr virus (EBV)

GB virus C

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis C

Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2

HIV

Human herpes virus (HHV) 8

Human T-cell lymphoma virus 1

Marburg

Zika virus

Adeno-associated virus

Adenovirus

BK virus

Chikungunya virus

Human herpes virus (HHV) types 6 and 7

JC virus

Lassa fever virus

Mumps

Rift Valley fever virus

Simian foamy virus

Simian virus 40

Varicella zoster

 

Patients with a serious viral infection may be instructed to avoid intercourse during and after an infection, or to wear condom.
