Description

The Vienna nomogram was developed to determine the optimum number of prostate core biopsies to take. It was developed based on data from the European Prostate Cancer Detection Study (EPCDS).

Patient selection: serum PSA 2 to 10 ng/mL (µg/L)

Parameters:

(1) age of the patient in years

(2) prostate volume in mL

Indications for 6 cores:

(1) age > 70 years and prostate volume <= 40 mL

Indications for 8 cores:

(1) age <= 60 years and prostate volume <= 30 mL

(2) age 61 to 70 years and prostate volume <= 40 mL

(3) age > 70 years and prostate volume 41 to 50 mL

Indications for 10 cores:

(1) age 51 to 60 years and prostate volume 31 to 40 mL

(2) age 61 to 70 years and prostate volume 41 to 50 mL

(3) age > 70 years and prostate volume 51 to 60 mL

Indications for 12 cores:

(1) age <= 50 years and prostate volume 31 to 40 mL

(2) age 51 to 60 years and prostate volume 41 to 50 mL

(3) age 61 to 70 years and prostate volume 51 to 60 mL

(4) age > 70 years and prostate volume 61 to 70 mL

Indications for 14 cores:

(1) age <= 50 years and prostate volume 41 to 50 mL

(2) age 51 to 60 years and prostate volume 51 to 60 mL

(3) age 61 to 70 years and prostate volume 61 to 70 mL

(4) age > 70 years and prostate volume > 70 mL

Indications for 16 cores:

(1) age <= 50 years and prostate volume 51 to 60 mL

(2) age 51 to 60 years and prostate volume 61 to 70 mL

(3) age 61 to 70 years and prostate volume > 70 mL
