Ruiz et al listed complications associated with placement of a catheter for a percutaneous coronary intervention. The authors are from multiple institutions in North America and Europe.
Patient selection: percutaneous catheter intervention
Vascular injury at the access site may include:
(1) dissection
(2) stenosis
(3) perforation
(4) rupture
(5) arteriovenous fistula
(6) pseudoaneurysm
(7) hematoma
(8) nerve injury
(9) compartment syndrome
(10) failure of a percutaneous closure device
(11) thrombosis
Major vascular complications:
(1) death
(2) life-threatening or major hemorrhage
(3) ischemia to viscera or extremity
(4) permanent neurological impairment
(5) distal embolization with amputation or irreversible end-organ damage
(6) unplanned endovascular or surgical intervention
Minor vascular complications are less severe types of:
(1) bleeding
(2) emboli
(3) transient neurological injury
(4) vascular repair
