The Vasa Syndrome is named after the sinking of the royal Swedish warship Vasa that sank in 1628. It is a cautionary tale in project management,


The Vasa syndrome refers to failure of a planned project.

 

The failure may arise from:

(1) failure to learn from previous mistakes or to listen to experts

(2) failures in communication

(3) frequently changing goals and objectives, causing confusion

(4) cutting corners while rushing to complete

(5) meddling by executives unfamiliar with essential details

 

How the Vasa Syndrome can be avoided:

(1) Keep goals aligned with capabilities.

(2) Encourage information flow throughout the organization.

(3) Changes in goals over time need to be clearly stated and understood.

(4) Learn from past mistakes.
