Description

Vampirism (the drinking of blood) is a rare disorder.


Vampirism is associated with a compulsion or desire to drink blood. The drinking of blood may relieve mental stress, cause sexual excitement or provide other reward.

 

Autovampirism refers to the patient drinking his or her own blood.

 

The person may drink human and/or animal blood.

 

Risk factors:

(1) psychotic state

(2) traumatic brain injury

(3) occult beliefs

(4) compulsive disorder

(5) sexual assault
