Some primary antibody deficiencies are associated with chronic and/or severe enterovirus infections. Antibody-mediated immunity is important in the control of these infections.
Primary immunodeficiencies associated with serious enterovirus infections:
(1) X-linked agammaglobulinemia
(2) autosomal recessive agammaglobulinemia
(3) common variable immunodeficiency (CVID)
Viruses involved:
(1) echoviruses
(2) poliovirus
(3) coxsackievirus
Infections that may occur:
(1) vaccine-derived poliomyelitis with attenuated live virus
(2) chronic enteroviral meningoencephalitis with or without disseminated disease
(3) other severe enteroviral infection
Prevention:
(1) maintenance of high serum IgG levels by infusion of immune globulins
