Description

The Vaccine Confidence Scale (VCS) can give insights into a parent's attitudes towards the vaccinations that are indicated for a pediatric patient.


Total number of items: 8

Number of groupings: 3 (harms, benefits, trust)

 

Items for harms:

(1) teenagers (children) receive too many vaccines

(2) if I vaccinate my teenager (child), he/she may have serious side effects

 

Items for benefits:

(1) vaccines are necessary to protect the health of teenagers (children)

(2) vaccines do a good job in preventing the diseases that they are intended to prevent

(3) vaccines are safe

(4) if I do not vaccinate my teenager (child) he/she may get a disease such a meningitis and cause other teenagers or adults also to get the disease

 

Items for trust:

(1) in general, medical professionals in charge of vaccinations have my teenager's (child's) best interest at heart

(2) I have a good relationship with my teenager's (child's) health care provider

 

Scoring: A 10 cm VAS scale from 0 (strongly disagree) to 10 (strongly agree)

 

subscore for each grouping =

= SUM(points for the items in the group) / (number of items in the group)

 

Interpretation:

minimum subscore for each group: 0

maximum subscore for each group: 10

 

Parents who may have low confidence in vaccines:

(1) racial or ethnic minority

(2) lower maternal education

(3) eligibility for a vaccine financial assistance program
