Rarely a person may develop an autoimmune hemolytic disease (AIHD) following a vaccination.
Implicated vaccines:
(1) oral polio
(2) diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus (DPT)
(3) COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2)
(4) pneumococcal
(5) influenza
The immune hemolysis may be complement-mediated.
Clinical features:
(1) recent history of vaccination
(2) sudden onset of a hemolytic anemia
(3) usually a positive antiglobulin test (may require specialized testing to detect)
(4) exclusion of another cause of hemolytic anemia
The rate of hemolysis may be severe.
It can recur following subsequent vaccinations.
