Uukuniemi Virus (UKV) is a cause of tick-borne encephalitis in Finland and other European countries.
Virus: phleborvirus in the family bunyaviridae
Spread: by Ixodes species
Clinical findings:
(1) fever
(2) fatigue and malaise
(3) headache
(4) encephalitis
Laboratory findings:
(1) thrombocytopenia
Diagnosis involves:
(1) exclusion of other pathogens
(2) demonstration of viral RNA by RT-PCR
