Description

Haloperidol is an antipsychotic agent associated with dystonia, which may also affect the muscles of the uterus.


Dystonia is associated with abnormal muscle tone with muscle spasms which can affect posture. It is a recognized adverse effect of haloperidol therapy.

 

Haloperidol may be given to a pregnant woman with psychosis.

 

Risk factors:

(1) haloperidol-naive patient

(2) high or repeated doses

 

Features:

(1) increased uterine muscle contractions

(2) cervical and limb dystonia

(3) increased fetal movements if the patient is a pregnant woman

(4) reversal on discontinuation of haloperidol exposure
