Description

Poeze et al used physiologic measures taken after admission to the ICU to identify those patients likely to have complications following cardiac surgery. This can help identify patients who may require more intensive therapy and closer monitoring. The authors are from University Hospital Maastricht in the Netherlands and University College London.

Parameters used to evaluate patients:

(1) stroke volume by esophageal Doppler ultrasonography

(2) heart rate

Timing of assessments:

(1) on admission to the ICU

(2) during the subsequent 4 hours

The risk of complications was increased in patients with:

(1) a stroke volume < 60 mL

(2) a heart rate > 90 beats per minute
