During donor blood collection, the volume of blood can be estimated based on the weight of the product.
Parameters:
(1) The specific gravity of whole blood is 1.053 g/mL, although 1.06 may be used as an approximation.
(2) The volume of whole blood collected is 450 mL +/- 45 mL (10%) = 405 to 495 mL.
(3) The weight of the collection bag without blood includes the empty donor pack with anticoagulant.
volume of blood collected in mL =
= ((weight of collected product in grams) – (weight of collection bag without blood)) / 1.053
