Description

Shahi et al evaluated the role of various measures in predicting prognosis for a patient with major burns. The authors are from Kerman University of Medical Sciences in Iran.

Patient selection: major burn injury, age 16 to 65 years of age

Parameters:

(1) Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI) of Tobiasen et al

(2) serum albumin on admission (time = 0)

(3) serum albumin at 24 hours after admission (time = 24)

Poor prognostic factors in major burn:

(1) ABSI >= 10 ("over 9")

(2) serum albumin at 0 hours < 3.5 g/dL

(3) serum albumin at 24 hours < 2.4 g/dL

where:

An ABSI of 8 or 9 indicates a serious burn.

Performance:

The area under the ROC curve was 0.94 for the ABSI.

The area under the ROC curve was 0.86 for serum albumin at 0 hours.

The area under the ROC curve was 0.92 for serum albumin at 24 hours.

Combining the ABSI with one of the serum albumin measures increased AROC to 0.97.
