Description

Karvellas et al correlated survival with the serum concentration of FABP1 in patients with acetaminophen-associated acute liver failure. Serum concentrations of FABP1 can help to identify patients who may require moer aggressive management such as hepatic transplantation. The authors are from the U.S. Acute Liver Failure Study Group (ALFSG)

FABP1 = liver-type fatty acid binding protein

Analysis: ELISA

Patient selection: acetaminophen-induced acute liver failure

Parameters:

(1) serum FABP1 concentration on day 1 (early)

(2) serum FABP1 concentration on day 3 to 5 (late)

Points

early FABP1

<= 350 ng/mL

> 350 ng/mL

late FABP1

total score =

= SUM(points for the 2 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 2

• An elevated serum FABP1 is associated with a worse 21-day mortality.
