Description

Modern travelers may have one or more portable electric devices. These devices can generate an electric field that may interfere with navigational aids on the aircraft. The degree of interference determines when the device can be used.


 

Classification based on when the device can be used:

(1) never

(2) always

(3) at the gate

(4) taxiing from gate

(5) take off and ascent

(6) at altitude

(7) during descent and landing

(8) taxiing after landing

 

Items that should never be used at any time:

(1) radio

(2) satellite radio

(3) portable TV

(4) walkie talkie

(5) walkie-talkie feature of a cell phone

 

Always permitted:

(1) pacemaker

(2) hearing aid

(3) noise canceling headphones with power off

 

Permitted at gate and on taxiing after landing:

(1) cellular phone

(2) PDA or computer with wireless card

 

When not in use during the flight the cellular phone should be turned off.

 

Permitted at gate and at altitude:

(1) laptop computer without wireless card

(2) handheld game

(3) audio player

(4) CD or DVD player

(5) video camera

(6) PDA without wireless card

(7) noise canceling headphone with power on

 

Any other device should be cleared before it can be used.
