Description

Pervez et al used Ki-67 immunostaining to distinguish between classic and blastoid mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). This can be helpful in more accurate classification of the patient, since the blastoid variant is more aggressive. The authors are from Aga Khan University in Karachi.

Patient selection: mantle cell lymphoma

Analysis: Ki-67 immunostaining positivity (proliferative index)

Ki-67

Diagnosis

< 40%

classic

40 to 50%

indeterminate; more likely blastoid

> 50%

blastoid

where:

• A Ki-67 > 30 is seen in 16% of classic but 100% of blastoid.
