Description

Ascaris lumbricoides may rarely invade the urinary tract.

Mechanisms: migration of an adult worm up the urethra; fistula with the GI tract

The patient usually has evidence of ascariasis elsewhere.

Presentations:

(1) hematuria

(2) bladder outlet obstruction with urinary retention

(3) ureteral obstruction with hydronephrosis

(4) evacuation of a worm while urinating

Ova may be deposited in the kidneys if there is migration up the ureter.
