Description

Sharma et al re-weighted the coefficients used in the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score. The authors are from the University of Michigan and the Arbor Research Collaborative for Health.

Patient selection: end-stage liver disease

Parameters:

(1) serum creatinine in mg/dL

(2) serum total bilirubin in mg/dL

(3) INR

In the original MELD score the variables had upper and lower bounds. The updated MELD score uses unbounded variables (page 1576).

updated MELD =

= (1.266 * LN((creatinine) +1))) + (0.939 * LN((bilirubin) + 1)) + (1.658 * LN((INR) + 1))

As indicated in Figure 3 the updated MELD score is lower than the existing MELD (2.4 vs 6; 4 vs 20; 7.5 vs 40).
