Description

Vano-Galvan et al reported updated criteria for the diagnosis of frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA). The authors are from the University of Alcala and University of Seville in Spain.


Major criteria:

(1) cicatricial alopecia of the frontal, temporal or frontotemporal scalp with follicular keratotic papules absent on the body

(2) diffuse bilateral eyebrow alopecia

 

Minor criteria:

(1) typical trichoscopic features (perifollicular erythema and/or follicular hyperkeratosis)

(2) histopathologic features of cicatricial alopecia in the pattern of frontal fibrosing alopecia and lichen planopilaris on biopsy

(3) hair loss or perifollicular erythema of additional sites affected by frontal fibrosing alopecia (occipital area, facial hair, preauricular, body hair)

(4) noninflammatory facial papules

 

Criteria for diagnosis - one or both of the following:

(1) 2 major criteria

(2) 1 major criterion and >= 2 minor criteria
