All of the major cardiology societies around the world developed a universal definition of myocardial infarction. This definition relies on cardiac biomarkers for documentation. This included a list of different categories for acute myocardial infarction.

• The categories appear to be a mix of cause and defect type.
• Type 2 AMI occur as a result of increased oxygen demand or decreased oxygen supply.
• Type 3 AMI includes new ST wave elevation, new LBBB on ECG, thrombus on angiography, etc. that occurs before blood can be collected or before cardiac biomarkers appear in the blood.
• PCI = percutaneous coronary intervention
• CABG = coronary artery bypass graft
