Mosca et al proposed preliminary criteria for the diagnosis of undifferentiated connective tissue disease (UCTD). The authors are from the University of Pisa in Italy.
Criteria:
(1) presence of signs and symptoms suggestive of a connective tissue disease
(2) failure to fulfill criteria for any defined connective tissue disease
(3) positive antinuclear antibodies (ANA)
(4) disease duration >= 3 years without progression to a defined connective tissue disease
If the disease duration is < 3 years, then the person is termed "early" UCTD, which may:
(1) continue as an undifferentiated CTD
(2) progress over time to a defined connective tissue disease
(3) be a transitory condition that reverts to normal
