Description

Roposch et al evaluated various findings in pediatric patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip. One group of findings relates to findings on ultrasonography. The authors are from multiple hospitals in England, Canada and Switzerland.

Analysis: ultrasound

Findings suggestive of developmental dysplasia of the hip:

(1) dislocation/displacement of the femoral head on dynamic ultrasound

(2) alpha angle (with various cut-offs: < 45°, < 50°, < 55°, < 60°; < 45° ranked highest)

(3) femoral head coverage (with various cut-offs: <= 45%, <= 50%, <= 60%, <= 70%; <= 45% ranked highest)

where:

• The alpha angle is the line between the baseline and acetabulum roof line (Graf et al). It is interpreted in light of the beta angle.
