Description

Lereuz-Ville et al classified ultrasound findings in a neonate or fetus with an intrauterine CMV infection. The presence of severe brain abnormalities is associated with a poor prognosis. The authors are from Universite Paris Descartes, Assistance publique-Hopitaux de Paris, Hopital Necker-Enfants Malades Paris, Poissy Hospital, Hopital Intercommunal de Poissy-Saint Germain and Hopital Americain de Paris.

Severe brain abnormalities on ultrasonography:

(1) severe ventriculomegaly (> 15 mm)

(2) periventricular hyperechogenicity

(3) hydrocephalus

(4) microcephaly

(5) increased cisterna magna (>= 8 mm)

(6) Vermian hypoplasia

(7) porencephaly

(8) lissencephaly

(9) periventricular cystic lesions of white matter

(10) agenesis of corpus callosum

Mild brain abnormalities on ultrasonography:

(1) mild ventriculomegaly (10.1 to 15 mm)

(2) intraventricular adhesions

(3) intracerebral calcifications

(4) subependymal cysts

(5) choroid plexus cysts

(6) calcification of lenticulostriate vessels in the basal ganglia

Extracerebral abnormalities detectable on ultrasonography:

(1) ascites

(2) pleural effusion
