Ultrasonography can help to identify a vein that is suitable for peripheral access for apheresis. The authors are from Houston Methodist Hospital.
Patient selection: apheresis
Examination: venous ultrasonography
Criteria for adequacy - all of the following:
(1) blood vessel is fully compressible by pressing with the ultrasound probe and not pulsating
(2) the vein is straight and has a length >= 2 cm
(3) the vein depth beneath the skin surface is < 10 mm (1 cm)
(4) the vein diameter is >= 3 mm
(5) the vein lumen is free of any echogenicity (thrombus, valve, etc)
(6) the vein is patent with the blood pressure cuff at 0 mm Hg and at 40 mm Hg
