neodymium iron boron

NIB, NdFeB

rare earth magnet; very strong magnetic field; not easily demagnetized; low mechanical strength; brittle; corrodes (oxidizes) if not coated

samarium cobalt

SmCo

rare earth magnet; very strong magnetic field; not easily demagnetized; low mechanical strength; temperature resistant; oxidation resistant

aluminum nickel cobalt

Alnico

formed by sintering or casting; good temperature resistance; easily demagnetized

iron oxide (with barium or strontium carbonate)

ceramic or ferrite

formed by sintering; strong magnetic field; not easily demagnetized; brittle

where:

• Rare earth magnets are made from the lathanoid series of elements.

• Sintering involves application of heat and pressure.
