Types of Human Hair

Description

Human hair may vary in its physical dimensions.

Parameters:

(1) diameter in microns (micrometers)

(2) length in mm

Diameter	Length	Hair Type
< 30 µm	<= 2 mm	vellus
< 30 µm	> 2 mm	lanugo
30 to 60 µm	> 2 mm	intermediate
> 60 µm	> 2 mm	terminal

where:

• Lanugo comes from the Latin lana for wool. Vellus is Latin for fleece.

• There is no term listed for a hairs with a diameter >= 30 µm with a length <= 2 mm. This could be called stubble but for these the length will not be used as a criteria.
