Description

A person may need to make a choice in certain circumstance. If one choice is clearly better than all others, then the choice is easy and there is no problem. With a binary choice there are 2 options.

Choice

Situation

Example

Hobson’s choice

The person must decide to take what is offered or to take nothing at all.

take it or leave it

Morton’s fork

There are 2 choices but both have the same outcome so it is like having no choice at all.

6 of one or a half dozen of the other; damned if you do and damned if you don’t

dilemma

There are 2 choices that are difficult to decide between (because they share either major benefits or loss)

Sophie’s choice

false dilemma

2 choices are presented both of which are undesirable, but other choices exist (pseudo-binary).
