Description

Some cases of intestinal intussusception occur secondary to a benign or malignant tumor. These cases need to be distinguished from those cases where no masses are evidence.


 

Benign tumors may include:

(1) lipoma

(2) leiomyoma

(3) adenomatous polyp

(4) neurofibroma

(5) hemangioma

(6) lymphoid tissue hyperplasia

 

Malignant tumors may include:

(1) adenocarcinoma

(2) neuroendocrine tumor

(3) sarcoma (leiomyosarcoma, other)

(4) lymphoma

 

Intussusception of the small bowel usually involves a bengin tumors while intussusception of the large bowel usually involves a malignant tumor.
