A keratitis with or without corneal ulcer may rarely be due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Patient selection: keratitis and/or corneal ulcer, typically in a region endemic for tuberculosis
Mechanism: immune stromal keratouveitis secondary to ocular tuberculosis
Clinical features:
(1) The ulcer is resistant to standard therapy.
(2) There is clinical evidence of tuberculosis.
(3) PCR on samples from the eye are positive for M. tuberculosis.
(4) Other causes of corneal ulceration are excluded.
Complications:
(1) tuberculous hypopyon
