Description

Gunsolus et al evaluated the accuracy of oxygen saturation values delivered by point of care (POC) devices. The authors are from Hennepin County Medical Center and the University of Minnesota.

In these devices the oxygen saturation may be calculated using other parameters directly measured.

The main reason for an inaccurate oxygen saturation was a pO2 less than 50 mm Hg.

When to directly measure the oxygen saturation by co-oximetry:

(1) pO2 less than 50 mm Hg

(2) an oxygen saturation value that is inconsistent with the clinical status
