Description

An incisional hernia may occur at a trocar site, especially if certain conditions are present.


Patient selection: status post laparoscopic incision

 

Issues in the detection of these hernias:

(1) limited post-operative surveillance (may take months or years to be recognized)

(2) may be asymptomatic

(3) use of ultrasonography at the sites

 

Risk factors for occurrence:

(1) age > 70 years (OR 3.5)

(2) body mass index (BMI) >= 30 kg per square meter (OR 3.3)

(3) larger trocar (diameter often >= 14 mm)
