Description

Pyruvate kinase deficiency results in a glycolytic defect in red blood cells. Certain conditions can trigger a hemolytic episode.

Hemolytic triggers:

(1) infection, including infection-related cold agglutinin disease

(2) stress

(3) pregnancy

(4) drugs (aspirin, antibiotics, etc)

Differential diagnosis:

(1) hemolytic transfusion reaction

A direct antiglobulin test may be helpful in triaging the patients.
