Description

Noorda et al reported a trigger tool for evaluating an elderly patient with polypharmacy and an adverse drug reaction (ADR). One adverse drug reaction is renal insufficiency and/or dehydration. The authors are from University Medical Centre Utrecht, Utrecht University, University of Groningen and The Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre Lareb.

Patient selection: geriatric patient with polypharmacy, admitted acutely to the hospital.

Adverse drug reaction: renal insufficiency and/or dehydration

Drugs associated with renal insufficiency and/or dehydration:

(1) ACE-I

(2) ARB

(3) NSAIDS

(4) diuretics (thiazide, loop, potassium-sparing)

The risk of renal insufficiency or dehydration may be increased if there are comorbid conditions or pre-existing renal disease.
