Description

The severerity of tricuspid regurgitation can be gauged by the ratio of the regurgitation jet area to the area of the right atrium seen on echocardiography.

Patient selection: tricuspid regurgitation

Examination: apical 4-chamber view, with calculations performed by computerized planimetry

Parameters:

(1) maximal regurgitant jet area in the echocardiogram

(2) right atrium area in the echocardiogram

ratio of regurgitant to right atrial area =

= (area of maximal regurgitant jet) / (area of the right atrium)

Interpretation:

• The mean ratio in normal subjects was 0.04 +/- 0.05
