Intoxication with the mycotoxin penitrem can result in tremors and other neurologic manifestations. Animals tend to be more often affected than humans.
Fungus: Penicillium crustosum
Mycotoxins: penitrem A, roquefortine, thomitrem
Clinical findings:
(1) consumption of moldy or spoiled food
(2) generalized tremor
(3) incoordination
Mechanism: damage to cerebellar granular neurons and Purkinje cells and involvement of the GABA(A) receptor function
A low dose exposure is usually reversible but a high can result in neuronal death.
